Instructional Technology Seminars for Faculty
Libraries, Computing
& Technology will offer two days of no-cost faculty workshops on
instructional technology in January. The workshops are designed to support
faculty in their teaching and research roles by providing seminars
led by experts in on-line learning, and instruction in the use of
a variety of software tools.
Faculty Seminars for Fall 2009 will be held January 6th & 7th, 2010.
Choose from one to
four sessions over two days. Free lunches at the Union
Parlors on both days for all participants feature MSU faculty and
staff reporting on uses of instructional technology.

- Seminars
provide on-line learning with hands-on instruction using computer
hardware, software, and MSU's technology classrooms. Morning sessions run from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. each day. Afternoon
sessions run from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. each day. Choose from one
to four sessions over the two-day period. There will be a full
group luncheon both days with speakers each day. All sessions
will start promptly at their scheduled times.

Class Descriptions
Use the schedule and enrollment form to sign up for free sessions
and meals.
- Access Database Design
- Acquire the tools needed to design a database that allows for easy data entry, maintenance, and retrieval.
- Access 2007
- You will be introduced to the four main objects (tables, queries, forms and reports) of a Microsoft Access database. The course emphasizes creating structurally-sound tables that promote data integrity. Access Database Design or equivalent is a prerequisite.
- Adobe Acrobat
- In this introductory course, you will use Acrobat 8.0 to convert MS Office documents to PDF files, modify PDF documents, and work with navigation tools, such as links and bookmarks.
- Adobe Presenter & Connect
- Adobe Presenter will help you enhance your PowerPoint presentations and make them more interactive by incorporating audio, video and flash
movies. Learn to add audio and video to your PowerPoint presentations with Adobe Presenter. In addition, learn how to conduct online meetings and lectures with Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro. Collaborate with whiteboards, share files, and more.
- ANGEL Advanced Features
- This class will explore ways to customize your ANGEL course with the use of environmental variables and tokens. You will learn how to personalize the student experience and indicate progression through course material. Use of agents and actions to automate tasks and perform functions will also be covered.

- ANGEL Assessments
- The ANGEL assessment component offers a variety of question types and settings. Building on the overview of assessment options provided in the ANGEL Introduction, the Assessment module will focus on enhanced assessment features and customization. In-class activities include assessment construction, manually grading assessment items, and reviewing assessment reports and statistics. Advanced options, such as the use of actions to control the release of lesson content and the use of custom team settings, will also be discussed.
- ANGEL Content & Communication
- This class covers ANGEL Lessons content including pages, links, assessments, surveys, discussion forums, and drop boxes. It also covers communication features including ANGEL mail messages, announcements, and chat rooms.
- ANGEL Gradebook
- The ANGEL Gradebook allows instructors to calculate grades using either points or percentage methods. This module covers setting up a gradebook, adding categories and assignments, adding grades via on-line graded assignments, manually entering grades, uploading grades, exporting grades, and new topics such as rubrics.
- ANGEL Introduction
- The ANGEL introduction module covers the basic ANGEL features that most people will use, including navigation, preferences, the toolbox, and calendar entries. An overview of courses is included, covering activity graphs, settings, resources, instructor tools, and reports. This is designed for new or prospective users.
- Camtasia
- Learn how to use the popular video creation and recording tool from TechSmith. This introduction to Camtasia will allow you to create, edit, and post video recordings, including PowerPoint slide shows with audio and video for your courses.
- Camtasia & Audacity Recording in MSU Classrooms
- Instruction on using Audacity and Camtasia for recording lectures and presentations in the classroom. Participants will gain knowledge of the hardware and recording software incorporated into the MSU tech rooms and how to use it.
- Dreamweaver CS3
- Learn to create web pages with the most versatile web site management tool available. This class will cover the basic Dreamweaver interface including the document and code windows, setting up a new web site, creating and formatting simple HTML pages, and working with images and links.
- Excel 2007, Levels 1 & 2
- Learn to use Excel spreadsheets to post and manipulate data, create charts and graphs, and use formulas. The afternoon session will provide additional tips and consulting.
- Fundamentals of Blended Instruction
- This class explores various techniques for altering your instruction to replace a portion of in-class seat time with out-of-class learning. We will experiment with online presentation and interaction tools, as well as share examples of successful blended lessons developed by MSU faculty members. Participants will be given the opportunity to blend their own lessons and receive feedback from the facilitators and their peers. In addition, participants may schedule a one-on-one consultation with one of the facilitators to follow up on ideas explored during the seminar.
Note: Participants must bring their own laptops.
- i-Clickers
- i-Clicker is one of the two recommended classroom response systems at MSU. Learn about use and set up of the i-Clicker system in MSU classrooms, as well as pedagogical aspects of clicker use.
- Library Tools & Services for Faculty I
- Learn how you can effectively take advantage of the MSU Libraries' extensive online resources and special faculty services to support teaching, research and outreach.
- Library Tools & Services for Faculty II
- Learn how new library resources and emerging technologies can increase your efficiency in research, teaching, and outreach.
- LON-CAPA Introduction
- Overview of the MSU-developed learning content and course management system with hands-on training on the essential skills needed to run your course on LON-CAPA.
- LON-CAPA Content Creation
- Hands-on workshop on how to author materials
including homework problems in LON-CAPA. Prerequisite of LON-CAPA
Introduction or being a current LON-CAPA user.
- Office 2007 New Features
- Learn the latest features in Microsoft's Office 2007. New Office interface features include the Office Button Menu, the Ribbon, the mini toolbar, the Quick Access toolbar, the status toolbar and Office XML format. Also covered are new features of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access.
- Photoshop CS3
- This workshop includes an overview of the many features and tools in PhotoShop including the workspace, image modes and file formats, selection tools, and raster and vector shape tools. Class activities will cover the creation of composite images and special effects using layers, text, filters, and painting and drawing tools.
- PowerPoint 2007, Levels 1 & 2
- Instruction in the popular presentation software from Microsoft.
Level 2 is a good option for people who have used PowerPoint to
create and post simple slide shows, but would like to use more advanced
features such as animations, video, and audio.
- Retrofitting Web Sites for Accessibility
- This is the companion workshop to Website Evaluation for Accessibility. Using a non-compliant website specifically developed for the workshop, we will walk you through the process of using Dreamweaver to repair inaccessible code and page structure. Accessibility problems you have identified in your website will also be addressed if they are submitted ahead of time. Handouts illustrating a step-by-step approach and samples of well-formed, accessible code will be provided.
- Web Site Evaluation for Accessibility
- Does your website meet the requirements of MSU's new Website Accessibility Policy? This workshop will introduce you to the evaluation protocol developed by the Usability & Accessibility Center and give you hands-on experience applying it. We will first review accessibility requirements, then break into small groups in which you will apply the protocol to your website. The workshop will conclude with a question and answer session.
- XHTML & Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
- Introduction to creating web pages using XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) covers creating and validating web pages using XHTML standards, and using CSS to add visual design appeal to web pages. The class is appropriate for people new to coding.
